[after checking out all his strings and putting himself through several terrible conversations for what feels like no reason, ratchet decides he should do something nice for himself and hang out with someone who's feelings aren't too complicated.]
Hey, Grim! I have some spare time this afternoon, you wanna do somethin' together?
[Maccadam's is a veritable web of strings, but it doesn't stop the mechs there from getting up to their usual antics. Grimlock, freshly off work, waves at Ratchet from his place in the queue for Beat Saber as Ratchet arrives.]
Now me Grimlock show dance skills!
[Even as he speaks, Shuffle wraps up her session with a loud, frustrated sigh, having failed to make the high scores again. She looks like she's considering restarting, but when she finds that the next ones in line include one of the medics and one of the Grimlocks, she hands the controller over.]
[he jogs over when he sees grimlock waving, slipping easily into the queue. ratchet gives shuffle a sympathetic look, but otherwise focuses on grimlock.]
[Grimlock nods, fired up by the encouragement. He plays what is probably his best session. In fact, after so many rounds on Beam Saber, his movements are more graceful and less brutal than his original fighting style. He manages to make it into the high scores, beating out the previous final qualifier.]
[He holds his arms up and gives a roar of triumph.]
[he watches with interest, looking like he's about to spring up and try to catch grimlock if he gets a little too close to the edge or almost rolls one of his dino-ankles.
ratchet gives him a cheer and a slap on the back when he's done, taking the controls and--
he manages to get through a song without biffing it, but his movements are very precise and clinical, there's no real beat to them and it shows in his score.
[Grimlock has never seen Ratchet so determined to have fun, and it honestly scares him a little. Still, he cheers because he does want Ratchet to get a good score.]
I'm a medic! [he barks, hopping back into position. he's a lot more energetic this time, maybe a little too energetic. ratchet misses enough of the beats that the song fails and cancels out.] Wait-- what happened?
[If this was anyone else, Grimlock would have laughed, but since this is Ratchet, he just nods politely.]
It okay. Maybe wait a little, and game get all better.
[He pats Ratchet on the shoulder, and if their strings happen to brush, Ratchet will feel Grimlock's affection and admiration toward him, like a student looking up to their mentor.]
[Grimlock takes up the controller and starts the game.]
So me Grimlock have swords. Then me Grimlock see blocks. And red sword hit red blocks, and blue sword hit blue blocks. No get colors wrong.
[For him, this is the main thing to remember. His battle experience allows him to hit the target each time, but the difficult part is hitting the right block with the right weapon. It's not like a real battle, where anything goes. There needs to be a bit of care, a bit of grace while playing this game]
It's simple enough in theory... [he watches grimlock with a huff, still thinking it looks easier than it was when actually playing.] But I've only used a sword... once? It was a disaster! I almost took off my own head!
Maybe me teach you use sword then. First find balance...
[As he imparts his sword fighting tips, he can't help think back on his own Ratchet, and his own Wheeljack. Neither of them were fighters, but they gave the Dinobots valuable lessons on how and when to use their strength.]
[he copies grimlock's motions - and copies them well, just in a very literal way. like with the first time he tried, he doesn't have much imagination for the movement.]
Okay. I can do that... it's easier without a sword. I don't really like swords, anyway. You get stabbed once, you get it all.
You know this is a smart person game, right? You can't just pick up a sword and swing without knowing what you're doing! That's probably why I did so bad... I've never really been all that good on the battlefield.
